Basic knowledge of Japanese real estate

Please have a look at this list of things you should know
when renting a property in Japan.

You can go almost anywhere by train in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Rent tends to be more expensive if a property is closer to the station.

In Japan, apartments are not usually furnished. People traditionally provide their one furniture and electrical appliances.
(Bed / Chest /Bookshelf / Table / Refrigerator / Telephone)

Please tell us if you prefer a furnished property.

Most properties do not allow pets and musical instruments.

Please tell us in advance if you want to have pets or a piano in your new home. We can then find the right property for you.

Legally we must state the distance to the nearest station in minutes.

One minute equals 80m.
Please allow extra time if you have heavy luggage. It may take longer for small children or senior citizens..

You are not allowed to change the wall paper, paint over wall paper, or change the interior design without permission.

It is also against the rules to put up shelves using nails or bolts.
It is against the rules to fix furniture or chairs to the floor.

Newer properties are more expensive than older properties.

If they are roughly the same size, in the same condition and the same distance from the station, newer properties are more expensive than older properties.

Upper floors are more expensive.

This is because of the view and security.

In Japan, room sizes are sometimes measured in tatami mats.
One tatami equals 1.62㎡.
